
With the onset of summer, we are wise to sip more often. Not only are special summer drinks part of the pleasure of family picnics, carnivals and theme parks, but in rising temperatures, we need to sip to cool down and hydrate our bodies.
The best summer drinks contribute water to our bodies while adding the least amount of other ingredients that could detract from nutrition or hydration. Love sweet tea and tangy lemonade? Sugar is sweet, but it adds calories and actually intensifies thirst. Alternative sweeteners like Splenda are options, but doctors often recommend keeping the number of diet beverages to one or two a day.
Your healthiest selection? Cold water. For flavor, add citrus slices, like lemon, lime, or orange. If you’re concerned about contaminants, buy a filtration system or your favorite brand of bottled water.
