Every year, treatment students look forward to returning to school in the fall. It’s a time to reunite with friends, see a favorite teacher again, sit beside a best friend in homeroom or show off your new school clothes.
But for some children, it is not such a joyous time. Not all children are able to adequately prepare for the beginning of the school year. YMCA’s Bright Beginnings is designed to aid these students. The Bright Beginnings initiative couples elementary students with adult volunteers to take them on shopping trips to get ready for school. This year the Greater Richmond branches of the YMCA are excited to serve the 25,000th child through the Bright Beginnings program.
Through Bright Beginnings, each student is able to shop for two outfits, socks, shoes, under garments, and a sweater or jacket. Later, the child and volunteer will enjoy a meal. Then the child will find a backpack filled with school supplies in his bus seat on the ride back.
