Urban Views Weekly recently visited Savannah State University. Founded 120 years ago, SSU is Georgia’s oldest public Historically Black College and University as well as the oldest college in Savannah. SSU offers many academic majors including a baccalaureate degree in Mass Communication with a concentration in Print and Online Journalism. UVW’s Editor Cesca Janece Waterfield met with upperclassmen to discuss the use of literary techniques in writing factually accurate narratives. That evening, the staff of Estuary, a national journal published at SSU, hosted “Coffeehouse Collective” in the black box theatre at Morgan Hall featuring authors Dr. Chad Faries, Lisa A. Flowers and Waterfield. Estuary publishes art and literature from students and faculty of HBCUs nationwide. The reading was followed by a reception in nearby Thunderbolt, Georgia.
On Friday, the three writers were guests of “Visions in the Arts,” hosted by Dr. Peggy Blood, Dept. Chair of SSU’s Fine Arts Program, on FM 90.3 WHCJ. Waterfield read work and performed original music. The program is produced by Grace Curry. Dr. Blood is a respected painter and the first African American to receive a Master’s of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
