The Commonwealth Cancer Institute
by Pat Vitsky

Dr. Marcus W. Brown early on developed the ‘life-long ambition’ of becoming a doctor. After graduating from Hampton University, he obtained his medical degree from MCV/VCU, and then received his specialty training in radiation oncology at the University of Southern California.
Returning to Richmond, a new ambition took hold. To deliver patient-centered, community-based, private and accessible radiation therapy in an urban setting – and in 1997, the first patient walked through the doors of his newly established Commonwealth Cancer Institute.
“I believe the CCI was the first new, major construction in the Carver neighborhood in 30 or so years,” Dr. Brown proudly comments, “Then VCU grew up all around us.” He is also quick to point out that his vision for the Center has stayed on track. “This is an ideal option for people who want to stay within the community to receive radiation treatments for their cancer diagnosis…we are known for our personal service and the individualized care we offer each patient,” he continues. Travel time when receiving radiation therapy at multiple appointments is often an issue for the patient, family and friends. Dr. Brown wants patients to know that they have a choice. “At this difficult time in their lives, having the doctor nearby and the treatment facility in the community is like having extended family just down the block,” he continues. Dr. Brown makes a point of encouraging patients to actively participate in decisions about care and wants them to know they have a right to choose at which facility they wish to receive it, no matter where they may have been referred. As he says, being close to home has its advantages.
The Commonwealth Cancer Institute treats all types of cancer, including breast, lung, and prostate; but also specializes in the treatment of skin cancer and keloids without disfiguring surgery. Patients appreciate the ease in which they can make appointments or conveniently speak directly with their physician. There is a special, caring, personal touch ingrained in the character of the modern facility and its well-trained staff and ample free parking.
Dr. Brown and his wife Caprice are the parents of two Hampton University students, Malcolm, 22 and Candice, 19; plus Myles who recently started high school in Richmond. His wish for them: to pursue their own ambitions. In his free time, Dr. Brown enjoys fishing, although “it has been quite a while since I have.”
