Crusade Anniversary

By Laura Kebede

When the Richmond Crusade for Voters started in 1956, Dr. Ferguson Reid, Dr. William S. Thornton and John M. Brooks held meetings to educate black voters on discriminatory policies to beat the system at its own game.

Fifty-six years later, the group still educates Richmond to make sure valuable votes are counted by holding registration drives and organizing town hall meetings about Virginia’s newest voter ID law.

The Richmond Crusade for Voters will be celebrating 56 years of service to Richmond at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at the Grace Center connected to Fifth Street Baptist Church.

Delegate Delores L. McQuinn of the 70th District will keynote the event entitled, “Our Voice, Our Vote, Our Future.” Tickets are $40 and must be reserved in advance by Friday, Sept. 28.

Call Annette Gordon at (804) 262-3062 for more information or to become a table sponsor for $400, $750 or $1,000.
