The Richmond community is invited to the “Your Sexual Health: Erasing the Stigma Conference” on Saturday, October 6th, noon to 8 pm, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center to talk openly with experts and health professionals, and to get connected to valuable resources and information. The purpose of the conference is to empower members of the community to discuss and learn about a highly stigmatized, yet incredibly relevant issue.
The City of Richmond consistently has higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI) than both state and national averages. STIs don’t discriminate against race, gender, sexuality, or socioeconomic class – we are all affected, and it’s time that we, as a community, talk about what can be done to make the community safer and our lives healthier.
The Your Sexual Health-Erasing the Stigma Conference is open to the public, with free rapid HIV testing, as well as testing for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and syphilis. Pre-registration is recommended online at www.research.net/s/38P66GK.
Entertainment, refreshments and fun are also a part of this event. Activities after 5 p.m. include a judged poster contest – for posters depicting safe/sexual health messages, prizes, spoken-word and other live entertainment.
This is expected to be a ground-breaking event in the City of Richmond, sponsored by the Richmond STI Coalition and supported by the HELP Community Advisory Board; Minority Health Consortium; Richmond City Health District; VCU Raise 5; the Virginia HIV/AIDS Resource and Consultation Center; Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention; and the Pennsylvania/MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center.
