The old adage “Do what I say not what I do” is more confusing than clear. It is more contradictory than well-defined and distinct. The statement sends mixed messages and leaves room for misinterpretation and obfuscation of the truth. We are standing historically at a “type” of crossroads where mixed messages, omission of facts, false equivalencies, and obfuscation of the truth are more damaging and destructive than they have been in quite some time.
There are not “many sides” to racism, bigoted hatred, white supremacy or fascism. As the President suggests, are there? Really? Seriously? No. There is only ONE side. Those who want to confuse the 1st Amendment right to peaceably protest and freedom of speech with white supremacy, anti Semitism and virulent hatred are on ONE side; and, that is to say they are against democracy, equal rights, freedom, justice and the Constitution of the United States of America. These men and women who identify with and boldly call themselves neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan, and avowed white nationalists are espousing unmitigated white supremacy without apology. They have only ONE side and that is antithetical to what the United Sates of America espouses as “American Values.”
If we cannot speak openly, honestly and directly to what racism, white supremacy and anti-Semitism is, we will be completely ineffective in extricating ourselves from its poisonous and cancerous effects. The very fabric of our national character and standing in the world is at stake. We cannot allow mixed messages and lukewarm responses that lack any moral character or authority to stir the cauldron of confusion and dissent. The longer the President refuses to address the horror of what happened in Charlottesville and the clear white nationalist ideology within the corridors of his White House for what they are, confusion will rein and the simmering pot of racial unrest will continue to boil and stew.
America is in need of LEADERSHIP and perhaps it is time to acknowledge we do have it. Equivocation and a lack of repudiation of vile and heinous acts of racist and bigoted agendas is NOT the leadership we need. The whole world is watching and witnessing a shameful display. We cannot claim any form of exceptionalism while we hide from truth telling and sympathize with neo Nazis and white supremacists under the guise of “It’s about hatred on ALL SIDES.” Seriously? NO.
