Regardless of your child’s interests, or your schedule and budget, the Richmond area offers a variety of camping options this summer. To offer favorable camper to counselor ratios, most programs have limited space. So be sure to register early!

 

 

Richmond Youth Jazz Guild’s Summer Jazz Boot Camp

About: Offers instruction in jazz music and improve in the areas of brass, woodwind, piano, bass, and drums. Professional musicians from the Jazz Composers Alliance, Inc. are instructors. Curriculum includes jazz ensemble training, improvisational theory and technique, master classes, jazz history, and how to “jam.”

When?  July 14 – 25, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Comedy Sportz Improv Kidz Camp

About: Half-day summer camp for children that help them develop confidence, have a blast, and make new friends. Campers learn the basics of improvisation from certified and experienced Comedy Sportz Instructors. Improv helps develop teamwork, trust, accepting of others, and a positive attitude; skills that build character and competence.

5-Day Chess Camp

About: World Champion, International Grandmaster Maurice Ashley’s own teaching method is used in this week-long camp. Ashley will attend the entire week, and classes are taught by instructors selected by the Grandmaster himself. Physical activities are also part of the Chess Camp. As a Special Bonus, campers may take advantage of Maymont Park, including the nature center and farm. Also, campers of the full or half day camps get to go rock climbing Friday night, July 25, from 5 to 7. Parents will need to provide transportation.

About:  Based on their One Week Sessions, Passages has reserved this one for girls only! In the “Rock and River Master Program,” campers learn the fundamental as well as advanced meth-ods of kayaking, rock climbing and rappelling. Includes a 5 mile river trip.

About: Indoor rock climbing, swim-ming, energetic games, and Camp Olympics. Each camper will learn the basic skills of rock climbing and team-work and build valuable relationships with both kids and staff alike.

Science Museum of Virginia

About: Science and technology classes for children aged 4 through 7th grade. Instruction is provided by experienced teachers and qualified assistants in theme-based science activities. In-cludes a light snack. Classes limited to 12 children per session, so please reg-ister early.

Science Explorers

About: Hands-on activities led by an experienced educator who makes science fun. Each session focuses on three science topics: Fizz, Bubbles & Goo: Basic chemical sci-ence that yields icky, sticky, weird and wonderful potions. Kids will be able to answer, “What makes it do that?” Once Upon a Science: Imaginations roam as kids get lost inside sensation-al storytelling. Then they discover the science behind the story in hands-on activities. Is it Art or is it Science? As they create their own masterpieces, children learn about historical figures like DaVinci, Audubon, and others who blurred the line between great science and emi-nent art.

About: Focuses on two fascinating topics: Future World Explorers: Campers make exciting explorations in tools and in-ventions that are shaping the future, environmental conservation, and at-mospheric processes, like the green-house effect. Each camper builds a model solar-house during a visit to the museum’s new Energy House. Toying with Science: Go learn with your toys! Campers explore scientific prin-ciples behind fun toys, learn about a national toy-design competition for middle schoolers, and more.

“Diggin’ in the Dirt” Summer Camp

About: A camp developed by Virginia Historical Society and Agecroft Hall, this day program introduces campers with educational activities and crafts. Campers learn how to identify leaves and trees, create garden stakes and pinwheels, and record weather condi-tions and their outdoor adventures in a nature journal. At the end of the week, campers host a Mad Hatter’s tea party for their families. Scouts, bring your badge books. Many of these ac-tivities fulfill Scout requirements.
