The Elegba Folklore Society, Richmond’s Cultural Ambassadors, presented one of the largest Kwanzaa celebrations on the East Coast, last month in Henrico Country. Interactive self-empowerment workshops and hands-on children’s activities helped the holiday’s concepts come alive. The day featured dance and music by Elegba Folklore Society, scholar Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Bilal, Grammy-nominated recording artist, workshops for children and adults and the African Market. Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga within the African philosophy known as Kawaida, which emphasizes community, and implements the best of African thought.
