Moore Street School located in the Carver Community of Richmond, was built in 1887 and is one of few remaining public schools built for African Americans after Reconstruction. The school’s design was an exception to those in Raleigh, Montgomery, Nashville and Atlanta which were of such inferior construction that most are not standing today. But the building is deteriorating; a significant part of Richmond’s history may soon be lost.
