Did you know that heat waves take more lives than all other natural disasters combined? According to one climatologist, each year more than 1,000 people die from heat-related causes in large US cities. During a single week in Chicago, 739 city residents died in July of 1995 due to extreme heat.
The Capital Area Agency on Aging is able to assist Richmond-area seniors with cooling equipment again this summer. Assistance is available on a limited basis to persons who need cooling equipment due to health concerns. Persons can be assisted on a first come, first serve basis. To
determine eligibility, call the Fan Care Hotline at 343-3005 and leave your name, address and phone number. A representative will return your call. For additional info, call 343-3000. Dominion partners with the Virginia Department for the Aging and Senior Connections in this program.
Senior Connections is a private, nonprofit organization established in 1973. The Agency provides direct services, information and referral, education and advocacy for seniors and caregivers residing in Richmond and surrounding counties. www.seniorconnections-va.org

Senior Connections is issuing a hot weather advisory for seniors. Prolonged exposure to hot temperatures, low fluid intake, certain medications and some chronic illnesses may increase the risks of dehydration and heat exhaustion especially among older adults. The Agency is advising family, friends and neighbors to take time to check on the well-being of older family members and friends, especially those living alone, to insure their comfort and safety during hot weather. Senior Connections offers the following safety tips:
1. Drink plenty of water to control body temperature and prevent dehydration. Do not wait until you are thirsty.
2. Limit outdoor activities. If you must go outdoors, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing that allows your skin to keep cool.
3. If you become overheated, increase the ventilation in your home by placing a fan in a window or installing an air conditioner.
