My husband and I would like to buy the vacant lot next to our house. How do we find out who owns it?
Buying a vacant lot is a great idea and a savvy real estate move. Combining the two lots could greatly increase the value of your property and make your property more attractive when you decide to sell. Another option, of course, is you could build a home on the newly acquired property to rent or eventually sell. As you can see, the additional lot could open up a number of opportunities. As far as finding out the owner of a particular property, it is a pretty easy process. If you’re already working with a Realtor, then he or she can research that for you because we have access to tax records through the multiple listing service (MLS). If you’re not working with a Realtor, you yourself can access that information online. Tax records and some owner contact information is a matter of public record. If you don’t have Internet access, you can go to Richmond City Hall or either the Chesterfield County or Henrico County Government buildings and access the public records on site. Here are the web addresses for the Real Estate Assessors’ office for each of the major counties and the City of Richmond. Hope this helps and good luck with your purchase.
