The Lady Trojans won their first ever CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 12, 2012 with an overall team score of 105 points at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA. Samantha Edwards (senior/ Elmont, NY) and Taylor-Ashley Bean (freshman/ Sandys, Bermuda) were both named CIAA Women’s Track MVPs.
Samantha Edwards won the women’s 400m dash with the fastest time in the Nation (53.95) and placed second in the women’s 200 meter dash event (24.85), also a NCAA qualifier.
Taylor-Ashley Bean won the women’s 1 mile run (5:21.50) and won the women’s 3000 meter run (11:35.87).
Sierra Clayton (senior/ Chesapeake, VA) won the women’s 800m run (2:19.72), placed sixth in the women’s high jump (1.56m), and placed third in the women’s 1 mile run (5:25.93).
The Lady Trojans team of Sierra Clayton, Cherish Richardson (junior/ New Haven, CT), Jourdan Johnson, and Taylor-Ashley Bean won the women’s distance medley event (12:33.66).
In the women’s 800 meter run, the Lady Trojans finished with twenty-six points with runners placing first (Sierra Clayton 2:17.33), second (Samantha Edwards 2:17.36), third (Taylor-Ashley Bean 2:19.07), and fifth (Jourdan Johnson 2:20.63).
Shaundra Cook competed in the women’s pentathlon and placed second overall with 3,181 points. She placed fourth in both the women’s long jump event (5.51m) and women’s high jump event (1.59m), while placing fifth in the women’s triple jump event (11.16m)
Alicia Terry (freshman/Roanoke, VA ) placed third in the women’s triple jump event with a NCAA provisional mark of (11.66m) adding six points of her own. Milicent Barber (sophomore/ Virginia Beach, VA) placed sixth in the women’s shot put adding one point to the team’s overall total of 105.
Trojans Place Second at CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
The Trojans placed second overall with 86 points at the 2012 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 12, 2012 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, VA.
Christopher Henry (sophomore/ Upper Marlboro, MD) won the men’s 5,000 meter run (16:17.94) and placed fourth in the men’s 1 mile run (4:29.55) collecting a total of 14 points.
Hildrew McNair (freshman/ Suffolk, VA) won the men’s pole vault competition (4.24m) adding ten points and Frederick Boone (junior/ Suffolk, VA) placed second behind McNair (4.24m) with eight points. Boone also placed third in the men’s heptathlon event (4331 points).
The Trojans shot put team added fourteen points with two throwers ranking in the top three. Rey Rijos (sophomore, Virginia Beach, VA) placed second in the men’s shot put event (14.82m) and Darien Kearney (senior/ Chesapeake, VA) placed third (14.79m).
The team of Jarius Reed (sophomore/ Natchez, MS), Daniel Ross (junior/ Baltimore, MD), Eric Thomas (sophomore/ Hampton, VA), and Ronald Johnson (sophomore/ Lorton, VA) placed second (3:19.51) in the men’s 4×400 meter relay event.
The men’s distance medley team of Andres McIntyre (junior/ Newport News, VA), Clive Cameron (sophomore/ Alexandria, VA), Jarius Reed, and Christopher Henry finished in third place (10:37.80) scoring six points.
In the men’s 800 meter run, the Trojans finished with fourteen points. Justin Pittman (freshman, Dale City, VA) placed second (2:00.04) and Prince Owusu-Mensah (freshman/ Woodbridge, VA) placed third (2:00.15).
Two Trojans collected five points in the men’s triple jump event. Jonathan McMillon (junior/ Alexandria, VA) placed fourth in the men’s triple jump (14.23) and Derrick Thomas (sophomore/ Hampton, VA) placed sixth (13.90).
Solomon & Christopher lead Trojans to a Double Header Sweep
The Trojans used a combination of outstanding pitching and solid defense to pick up a double header sweep against the visiting Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University on Sunday, Feb. 12. Right handed pitcher Rico Solomon struck out 7 batters in game one and right handed pitcher Nicholas Christopher struck out 4 batters in game two.
In game one, Rico Solomon (sophomore/ Atlanta, GA) pitched a complete game striking out 7 batters while scattering only 5 hits in a 2-1 win. Freshman Tyler Coleman (Chester, VA) led the Trojans with 2 hits and 1 RBI. J.D. McCarty also drove in a run.
In the second game, Nick Christopher (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA) pitched 6 strong innings surrendering 4 hits in a 4-1 victory. William Tapp (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA) relieved Christopher in the 7th inning, picking up the save. Christopher, Coleman, and McCarty all drove in a run. This win improved the Trojans record to 2-1 early in the season.
The Trojans return to action Saturday, February 18 for a three game series against Alderson & Broaddus College.
