Samantha Edwards of Virginia State University was named Atlantic Region women’s indoor track athlete of the year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA), erectile announced on March 2.
The senior from Elmont, physician N.Y., scored 26 points at the CIAA Championships to lead Virginia State to the team title. She won the 400 Meters and finished second in the 200 Meters and 800 Meters at the 2012 CIAA Championships. Edwards’ season-best times of 53.95 in the 400 Meters and 24.24 in the 200 Meters rank first and fifth in NCAA Division II, respectively.
Samantha will be on hand for the NCAA Division II Indoor track & Field Championships next weekend, March 9-10, in Mankato, Minn. NCAA.com will provide live coverage of the national championships.
Three Lady Trojans Receive All-Region Awards for 2012 Division II Indoor Track & Field
Virginia State University’s Samantha Edwards (senior/ Elmont, NY), Shaundra Cook (junior/ Franklin County, VA), and Sierra Clayton (senior/ Chesapeake, VA) were all named honorees of the All-Atlantic Region Awards for indoor track & field in Division II by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) on February 29th.
Trojans Eliminated by Livingstone in CIAA Tournament
The Trojans rallied back to take the lead in the final seconds, but could not hold on for a win in the 2012 CIAA Basketball Tournament as Livingstone defeated Virginia State 60-58, in Charlotte, NC. Mike Bynum (junior/ Norfolk, VA) scored a career-high 23 points, nailing 5 treys from downtown for Virginia State.
Lady Trojans Eliminated From CIAA Tournament after Double Overtime Loss to Bowie State, 72-67
The Lady Trojans fell in a double overtime thriller to the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on the second day of the CIAA Basketball Tournament. Marquilla Evans (senior/ Portsmouth, VA) scored a game-high 16 points nailing a perfect 4 of 4 shots from three-point land and Quiana Kizer (junior/ Alexandria, VA) followed with 15 points, both from the VSU bench.
Genchi Places First at ECSU Spring Classic Golf Tournament
Stephen Genchi (senior/ Jupiter, FL) shot a 68 (-4), ranking first individually overall at the Elizabeth City State Spring Classic Tournament at the Scotch Hall Preserve in Merry Hill, NC on Monday, February 27. The Trojans placed second overall with a team total of 301 (+13).
Other Trojans contributing to the strong second place finish were; Josh Boyd (senior/ Portland, OR) shot a 75 tying for seventh place and teammate Rashad Hunt (junior/ Chesapeake, VA) finished one stroke behind Boyd with a 76. Aaron Bryant (junior/ Prince George, VA) shot an 82, tying for fifteenth place individually.
VSU golf will be in action again on March 12th at the Southern Division Tournament in Raleigh, NC.
