Virginia State University’s baseball team returned to CIAA action on Sunday afternoon as the Trojans swept Lincoln University 12-9 and 10-1, at Oxford High School.
After the Trojans jumped out to an early lead, mother nature brought in showers which caused Saturday’s double header to be moved to Sunday. On Sunday, the Trojans bats picked up where they left off as they pounded out a season high 17 hits in a 12-9 victory over the Lions in game one. RHP Rico Solomon (sophomore/ Atlanta, GA) got the win going five strong innings, allowing only four earned runs. Leading the charge at the plate were Joshua Markins (freshman/ Colonial Heights, VA) and Tyler Coleman (freshman/ Chesterfield, VA) who both had four hits with three RBI’s. William Tapp (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA) added three hits and three RBI’s, while Michael Whiten (senior/ Baton Rouge, LA) and Percy Evans (junior/ Cary, NC) chipped in with two hits.
In the nightcap of the double header, Trojans LHP Nicholas Persad (freshman/ Central Islip, NY) earned his first win of the season throwing a complete game. Persad pitched all seven innings allowing one run, struck out four and scattered nine hits. Josh Markins remained hot at the dish as he had two hits and drove in three more RBI’s to give him a total of six runs batted in on the day. Howard Spencer (senior/ Richmond, VA) added two hits for the Trojans. John McCarty (junior/ Colonial Heights, VA), Percy Evans, Nick Christopher (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA), and Tyler Coleman also had hits for the Trojans.
The Trojans raised their record to 13-11 overall and 7-4 in CIAA. They return to action Tuesday as they travel to Newport News Apprentice School to take on the Builders.
Lady Trojans Tennis Team Sweeps Thru Northern Division Round-Up
The Lady Trojans won four straight matches over all of the teams from the Northern Division of the CIAA on March 23-25 in Petersburg, VA. VSU swept thru Chowan (7-2), Bowie State (9-0), Elizabeth City State (9-0), and Lincoln (9-0) moving to 8-2 in the CIAA conference play.
Trojans Tennis Wins Three straight Over CIAA Northern Division
The Trojans breezed through CIAA Northern Division play with wins over Chowan (7-2), Lincoln (8-1), and Virginia Union (9-0) in Petersburg, VA on March 23-25. VSU improved their record to 8-2 in the CIAA conference.
Thompson Earns 100th Career Victory With Win Over Winston-Salem State
In his eighth season as head men’s tennis coach at Virginia State University, Gene Thompson won his 100th career game on Saturday, March 17th against Winston-Salem State, 6-3. Thompson and his Trojans won three straight matches in Charlotte, NC; two wins over Johnson C. Smith and his 100th career victory over Winston-Salem State.
The Trojans shut out the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith, 9-0 on March 16 as coach Thompson moved within one win of his 100th career victory. In doubles competition, the duo of Nicholas Pfab and Emmanuel Haug won 8-2 against Dion Chever and Darrel Sawyer- of JCSU. Twin brothers Matthew and Nicholas Brown defeated Tuan Nguyen and Tobias Whitley 8-1 in the second doubles spot. VSU closed out doubles play with an 8-0 shut-out victory by Avery Saunders and Evan Dirksen over JCSU’s Ricardo Corrett and Daniel Hemana.
On Saturday, the Trojans battled Winston-Salem State looking to give their head coach his 100th win. VSU won four out of the five singles matches. Nicholas Brown, Matthew Brown, Avery Saunders, and Evan Dirksen all picked up wins.
Mattia Breaks School Pitching Record With 21 Strike-Outs versus Lincoln
RHP Jessica Mattia set a new Lady Trojans softball school record, throwing 21 strike-outs in a 3-0 win versus the Lady Lions of Lincoln University on Monday, March 19 in Petersburg, VA. The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Lions also in game two, 7-4.
Mattia faced twenty-four Lady Lions and struck out a new Virginia State University record amount of twenty-one batters. She surrendered one hit, walked none, and had one fly-out picking up her tenth win of the season.
